What a Claude skill is, in plain English

Claude is a large language model (LLM) made by Anthropic. You talk to it in plain words at claude.ai, in the Claude desktop app or on your phone.

A skill is a saved set of instructions that teaches Claude one kind of task, such as scoring a resume or prepping for an interview. You upload each skill once. After that, Claude reads your request, finds the skill whose description matches and follows its steps. You never call a skill by name. You just ask.

In one minute

  • Claude does the thinking. You ask in plain words, like “Should I apply to this?”
  • Skills tell Claude how.Saved sets of instructions, each for one kind of task, installed once.
  • Your records remember.A new chat doesn't carry your search with it. A folder of small files keeps your resumes, letters, numbers and companies, so each session starts where the last one stopped.
  • Your dashboard shows. One private page lists every application, interview and next step.
  • You decide.Claude drafts. You send. Nothing goes to anyone without you.

  1. 1

    Set up

    Setup · jh-intake

    Start with a tested system

Asks the setup questions two or three at a time, helps you choose where your records live, runs a save test, builds your profile and plans your first week.

What you get: A profile, a tested records folder and a plan for your first seven days.

Try saying: “Set up my job hunt kit.”

Your benefitYou start organized, not from a pile of chats.

    Records · jh-records

    Every file in one place

Decides where each fact goes and saves it safely: read the file, edit it, write it, read it back, and keep the old copy until the new one checks out. Runs behind the other skills.

What you get: An index of your search, one file per company, a sent ledger, a claims register and a save receipt after every session.

    Try saying: “Log this application.”

Your benefitYou never lose work or end up with two resumes that disagree.

  2. 2

    Prove it

    Career bank · jh-experience-bank

    Every result, with proof

Interviews you about your career one role at a time and files each story and number with a tag: verified, from your own records, or still to confirm. Unproven numbers stay out of written documents.

What you get: A growing bank of stories and results, plus a to-confirm list.

Try saying: “Interview me about my career.”

Your benefitYou walk into any room with numbers you can defend.

    Resume scoring · jh-resume-signals

    Know your score first

Builds a file of what hiring readers expect for your target role from real postings and strong profiles, turns it into a weighted rubric, scores each resume version and checks that applicant tracking systems can read it. Code does the math.

What you get: A score out of 100 and fixes ranked by points gained per effort. 85 or higher means interview-ready.

Try saying: “Score my resume for my target role.”

Your benefitYou fix the gaps before a recruiter finds them.

  3. 3

    Aim

    Posting analysis · jh-jd-analysis

    Skip the wrong jobs

Reads a posting against your resume, your experience bank and the job you said you want. Scores the fit, reads the real scope, level, company and posted pay, then makes a call: apply, adapt first or skip. A dealbreaker caps the call at skip.

What you get: A fit score, strengths, gaps, which resume to send, where to apply and a clear call.

Try saying: “Should I apply to this?”

Christine Castro's public hiring tools inspired the scope read. This kit rewrites those ideas in its own words with its own scoring.

Your benefitYou spend evenings on roles that fit.

    Resume versions · jh-resume-versions

    One resume per target

Builds a resume for each kind of role you target, numbers every version, logs what changed and tracks which company holds which copy. Before a screen, it shows what's on their copy and what has changed since.

What you get: Numbered versions in Word and PDF, word-level diffs, a changelog and a sent ledger.

Try saying: “Tailor my resume for this posting.”

Your benefitYou never quote a stale number on a live call.

  4. 4

    Apply

    Cover letters · jh-cover-letter

    Letters with a point

Finds a dated, recent fact about the company for the opening, matches proof from your bank to how that company works and names any gap plainly. Scores each draft on seven criteria in code and revises anything under 90.

What you get: A letter of about 275 words in your voice, a claims table, a score with reasons and a filed copy.

Try saying: “Write a letter for this role.”

Your benefitEach letter earns a read.

    Voice check · jh-voice-check

    Sounds like you

Builds a voice profile from things you wrote, scans every draft for phrasing that reads machine-written, and shows each hit with the reason and a rewrite. Runs behind the other writing skills and on its own.

What you get: A cleaner draft plus a table of what changed and why.

Try saying: “Does this sound like AI?”

Your benefitYour writing sounds like you, and you learn which habits to drop.

  5. 5

    Follow through

    Inbox watch · jh-inbox-watch

    Never miss a reply

Scans your inbox, sent mail and LinkedIn notification emails three ways, on demand or, on Pro or Max, as a scheduled task twice a weekday. Logs acknowledgements, applicant tracking systems and screening questions, flags likely scams and drafts replies with interview times from your calendar.

What you get: A short digest, updated statuses and draft replies you review and send.

Try saying: “Check my inbox for job mail.”

Your benefitNothing slips past you, and nothing gets sent for you.

    Interview dossier · jh-interview-dossier

    Walk in ready

Before every interview, recruiter screen included, reads your records, researches the company, the role and each named interviewer, dates every source and sizes the dossier to the round.

What you get: Findings you can check in 90 seconds, interviewer studies, talking points with proof, questions with speakable replies, landmines to avoid and a one-page call sheet.

Try saying: “Prep me for Thursday.”

Your benefitYou ask better questions than the other candidates.

Your dashboard

One private page for the whole search

Claude publishes your dashboard as a private page in your Claude account. Keep it open all search long. Press Update now and it reads your Gmail inbox and sent mail, LinkedIn notification emails and Google Calendar, then proposes changes: a new acknowledgement, a rejection, an interview, a reply you owe. You tick the ones you want, and only those land.

On the free plan, your dashboard keeps its copy in your browser and in the exports you download. Saving to your Claude account and Update now need Pro or Max.

What the dashboard does for you

  • See where everything stands.Every application, interview and offer on one page, with what needs you today at the top.
  • Know who you owe a reply.Recruiters, hiring managers and referrals get tracked. Portals with nobody to chase stay parked.
  • Stay current without retyping.Update now proposes each change from your mail and calendar, and you approve it.
  • Feed the skills better material.Your Library holds resumes, postings and writing samples for Claude to learn from.
  • Never lose your data.Copies live in your browser, your Claude account and every export, and each update takes a restore point first.
  • Stay in control.Your dashboard never sends, replies, labels or deletes anything.

Requirements

What you need before you start

  • Any Claude plan, the free one included.Pro or Max adds what the free plan leaves out: a dashboard that saves to your Claude account and runs Update now on your mail and calendar, scheduled inbox scans and more usage per session. Use a personal account, and keep your search off any work account.
  • Code execution and file creation turned on.Open Settings, then Capabilities, and switch it on. Newer versions of Settings call it Create and edit files. Skills won't run without it.

Your accounts and your privacy

Your accounts, your records, your call

You connect only the apps you choose, and you can remove any of them in Settings. Claude reads what you allow, files what it finds and drafts what comes next. Nothing goes out until you send it.

Gmail or Outlook

Inbox watch

Scans your inbox, sent mail and LinkedIn notification emails on demand, or on Pro or Max as a scheduled task twice a weekday. Logs acknowledgements, applicant tracking system names and screening questions, flags likely scams and drafts replies. Zero sending, replying or forwarding.

Google Calendar

Interview scheduling

Reads your free and busy time, respects your working hours and proposes three to five windows with prep time before and breathing room after. Creates the event only after you say yes.

Google Drive

One records folder

Holds your index, company files, sent ledger, claims register, resume versions and dossiers. A save test runs at setup, and every save gets read back. A folder on your computer or a private GitHub repository works too.

LinkedIn, with permission

Messages, read only

Notification emails never include the message text. With a browser connection and your yes, Claude reads your LinkedIn messages without replying. Without one, you paste what matters.

What stays out

Never asked for, stored or exported: government ID numbers, bank details, passwords, phone numbers, your home address or your references' contact details. Pay targets are optional, stay in your own account and never go into a resume, letter, dossier or message.

What the kit never does

Claude never sends an email, message or application for you, and never contacts anyone. Your dashboard stays private until you choose to share it, and a page that reads your mail can't be shared publicly.

Honest limits

Update now reads Gmail, Google Calendar and LinkedIn notification emails only, and needs Pro or Max. Claude can misread a posting or a scope, so treat every score as guidance, not a verdict. Claude's menus change, so if a name differs from the guide, check support.claude.com.

Questions people ask

Job hunt toolkit FAQ

What is a Claude skill?

A Claude skill is a saved set of instructions that teaches Claude one kind of task. You upload it once as a zip file. When your request matches the skill's description, Claude loads it and follows its steps, so you ask in plain words instead of calling the skill by name. Skills need code execution and file creation turned on.

Do I need technical skills to use the toolkit?

No. You upload the skill zip files once, turn on one setting and talk to Claude in plain words. A plain-English guide explains every term the first time it appears and walks you through setup, which takes about 20 minutes.

Which Claude plan do I need?

Skills run on any Claude plan, including the free plan, with code execution and file creation turned on under Settings, then Capabilities. Pro or Max adds the rest: your dashboard saves to your Claude account and reads your mail and calendar with Update now, inbox watch can run as a scheduled task, and you get more usage per session. Use a personal account rather than a work account for your search.

How much does the toolkit cost?

Nothing. Request it by email from William Toll at utollwi@gmail.com. Skills run on Claude's free plan, and a Pro or Max plan adds the dashboard's account saving, mail and calendar updates and scheduled inbox scans.

Will Claude send emails or applications for me?

No. Claude drafts and you send. Nothing in the kit sends, replies to or forwards email, submits an application or contacts anyone. Calendar events get created only after you say yes, and the dashboard never sends, replies, labels or deletes anything.

Where do my job search records live?

In a records folder you choose: Google Drive, a folder on your computer linked through the Claude desktop app, or a private GitHub repository. Claude runs a save test before trusting it. With no connection, Claude hands you each changed file to save yourself.

Will my resume and cover letters sound like AI?

Not if you do your part, and the kit makes that part smaller. Claude builds a voice profile from things you wrote, scans every draft for machine-sounding phrasing and rewrites each hit. Letters need a dated company hook and sourced numbers. Read each draft aloud and add what only you know. No kit can promise more.

Is it OK to use AI in a job application?

Many employers allow it, some ask you to say so, and a few forbid it. Read each posting and each application form, and if a company asks, answer honestly. You own what you submit, so check every figure before you send it.

Does the toolkit work for any job or industry?

Yes. Each skill is written for a job search in any field. You name the roles you want, and Claude builds a scoring rubric for each one from real postings and strong profiles you collect.

Does it work with Outlook and LinkedIn?

Inbox watch works with Gmail or Outlook. Update now on the dashboard reads Gmail and Google Calendar. LinkedIn has no connector, so Claude works from LinkedIn notification emails, reads your messages through Claude in Chrome with your permission, or uses messages you paste.

What happens to my salary expectations?

Pay targets are optional. If you add them, they stay in your own account and your own exports. Claude uses them only to judge fit and prepare the pay conversation, and never writes them into a resume, letter, dossier or message.

Runs in your own Claude account

Claude drafts. You decide, and you send.

  • Request the kit and you get the skills, the plain-English guide and the dashboard.
  • Every number gets a source.
  • Every file gets a save receipt.
